6 laser hair removal myths: what to know

Comparing opinions can leave you with more questions. This guide pairs six common beliefs with useful questions for your decision, without promising the same result for everyone.

1. “You should feel absolutely nothing”

Sensation varies by treatment area and person. Discomfort can occur; speak up during the appointment if anything concerns you. Someone else’s comfortable experience cannot predict yours.

Ask how to report discomfort and request a pause. Do not take or apply products to tolerate a session without receiving instructions.

2. “Laser hair removal is 100% risk-free”

No treatment can promise zero risk. Redness and swelling can occur, and burns or pigment changes are also possible. Professional experience and an appropriate assessment matter.

Before deciding, ask about the risks in your case, who will perform the procedure and what follow-up is available. An offer or a device name cannot answer those questions.

3. “Every hair color responds the same way”

Hair pigment affects the response. Blonde, white, gray or red hair may respond less well than dark hair. Do not purchase a package assuming that every hair will disappear equally.

Describe your area of interest and ask what expectations are reasonable for that hair. A promotional photograph cannot predict an individual result.

4. “Darker skin can never be treated”

Darker skin may be suitable, but careful selection of technology and settings is needed. That does not make every device or setting appropriate for every person.

Bring questions about your skin tone, recent sun exposure and previous experiences. Avoid deciding solely on a commercial label saying “for all skin types”.

5. “It can be used anywhere, including over tattoos”

Some areas and circumstances require excluding or adapting treatment. Laser hair removal should not be performed over tattoos or on the eyelids, eyebrows or surrounding eye area.

Ask for the exact area to be defined before purchasing. See Polanco’s published Treatments for its listed areas. A service mentioned on another clinic’s website is not automatically offered here.

6. “It costs less for everyone and lasts forever”

Hair reduction does not guarantee lifelong absence of regrowth. Several appointments and maintenance may be needed. Consider the complete plan rather than a single-session price.

Ask what your quote includes, how progress will be reviewed and what could add to the cost. If you travel from San Diego, include transportation and availability in your comparison. We cannot promise universal savings.
